Art Adventures Summer Camp
Join the NBMAA this summer in a five-week series of Virtual Art Adventures! Each week, campers will explore a new theme with help from Museum educators. In these 45 minute camp sessions, campers will listen to a favorite children’s story, look at art from the Museum's collection, create an at-home masterpiece, and get movin' and groovin' to a related song and dance.
Packages of art supplies for each weeks’ art activity will be available for purchase online and pickup at the Museum the week of each camp session; each art supply package must be purchased before the Monday of the corresponding art session. Art supply lists are also available below each camp session’s description. Participants MUST preregister for each session; preregistration links provided below.
Week One | July 8
Where Art Meets S.T.E.M. – Creating Color
To kick off the summer, we are starting with the basics of art and learning all about color! Campers will discover how colors are made and learn vocabulary to describe various colors. Teaching artist Margaret Freedman will demonstrate a color mixing activity using plastic wrap and Museum educator Stephanie will end the session with campers rocking out to a color song and dance!
Art materials needed:
- 2 pieces of plastic wrap, approx.. 9” x 12” or larger
- 3 different colors of paint
- Heavier plain white paper
Week Two | July 15
This week, campers are encouraged to take part in some messy play! Campers are encouraged to use their imagination to create large-scale drawings on their sidewalk or driveway! Teaching artist, Margaret Freedman will guide campers through the creative drawing process. Don’t worry parents—this outdoor mess is washable! The session will end with calming garden yoga, led by Museum educator Stephanie.
- A cut-up box or heavy paper
- Cup of water
- Something heavy to crush the chalk if desired
- Paintbrush, Q-tip, or cotton ball
Week Three | July 22
Magic & Myth
In this camp session, campers will discover the magical stories hidden in art, from the past, present, and future! We will delve into the origins of some favorite myths and legends and campers will create a fantastic creature in a drawing activity led by teaching artist Margaret Freedman. To end, campers will break out into a monster boogie.

Week Four | July 29
Roar! Moo! Quack! This week campers will meet some of the friendly animals inhabiting the NBMAA's grounds with one of our Museum Educators. Teaching artist Margaret Freedman will show campers how they can construct their favorite wild species using household materials. Then, campers will transform into a colony of penguins, moving their flippers to a song led by Museum Educator Stephanie.

Week Five | Aug 5
On the Earth & in the Sky
In this session, campers will become observers of the whole world! Guided by Museum educators, campers will carefully examine the form, texture, and color of the natural world. Teaching artist Margaret Freedman will show campers hidden techniques for recreating elements of nature in their own artwork. The sky is the limit for their creative process in this adventurous and artistically rewarding camp session!
- Shaving cream
- 2-3 colors of paint or 2-3 colors of food coloring
- Foil pan or large plate
- kitchen utensil, like a fork, to swirl in shaving cream
- Heavy paper
- Small square of heavy cardboard
- Plain white paper at least 9” x 12” or larger
