Anton Goering (1836–1905), Germany
Carúpano, Venezuela, n.d.
Watercolor on paper
Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros
From 1866 to 1874 Goering traveled through Venezuela to collect, identify, and paint specimens of flora and fauna for the Zoological Society of London. The Caribbean port city of Carúpano was the first stop on his eight-year voyage. In this watercolor, the artist focuses on the foreground where he records many individual plant species. Dividing the paper into quadrants, fold lines are visible, possibly the result of folding for convenience during travel.
