While serving as the captain of the HMS Vindictive, Admiral Sir Michael Seymour was assigned to paint the Venezuelan port La Guaira. Before the advancement of photography such duties were a common practice among officers traveling with the British Navy. Seymour later gave a group of these watercolors to his friend and commander, Rear Admiral Sir Francis William Austen (1774–1865), who was the elder brother of novelist Jane Austen.
