ABOUT THE EVENT

Adult Studio Class | Cut Paper with Mary Smeallie

 —

In Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated), artist Kara Walker engages with cut pages from Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War, a pro-Union depiction of the Civil War, by overlapping them with her own silhouetted images. In doing so, she challenges viewers to face America's history of racial inequality, as well as issues of race, gender, and sexuality in contemporary society.

Inspired by Walker's use of cut-paper silhouettes in this workshop participants will learn about the history of this craft, as well as how it can be used to interact with, reshape, and recontextualize a preexisting image or narrative.
