ABOUT THE EVENT

Gallery Talk | Through the Painter’s Eyes—A Look at Portraits by John Singer Sargent, Thomas Eakins, and Cecilia Beaux

Join us for a closer look at artists featured in For America: Paintings from the National Academy of Design. In this informative lecture, we will examine the portraiture of John Singer Sargent, Thomas Eakins, and Cecila Beaux; while Beaux and Sargent are known for their flattering portrayals of their fashionable sitters, Eakins’ portraits are generally devoid of glamor and built on realistic details. This talk will examine the differences, as well as the similarities between these artists to reveal not only the character of the individual artist, but also how their work reflected the complexity of the times they lived in.
