ABOUT THE EVENT

NEW/NOW: Shantell Martin | Live Drawing

On October 13, watch Shantell Martin (1980) as she creates a monumental, one-of-a-kind live drawing in the Museum’s William and Bette Batchelor Gallery, where her forthcoming exhibition NEW/NOW: Shantell Martin will take place. Viewers can watch the artist’s dynamic and spontaneous process unfold in real time, as Martin’s 40 by 16 foot mural takes form.

Among the most innovative young artists working today, Martin is known for her exploration into the vast potential of the drawn line. Using an ink marker, she creates improvisational compositions that exist as small personal sketches, large-scale murals, live drawing performances, and collaborations with high-pro fashion brands, shoe-makers, engineers, and pop stars. On view at the NBMAA from October 22, 2020-Aril 18, 2021, NEW/NOW: Shantell Martin represents the artist’s first career retrospective. Celebrating the span of Martin’s output, the show will explore the evolution of her artistic style and technique while focusing on three aspects of Martin’s output—art, commerce, and technology— and their myriad cross-sections.
