"On the Road" with Shantell Martin, Theo Coulombe, and Laksmi Hedemark

Join current NEW/NOW artist Shantell Martin, Connecticut-based photographer Theo Coulombe, and director, writer, and actor Laksmi Hedemark for an engaging virtual discussion about their 2017 collaboration On the Road. In the summer of 2017, Martin, Coulombe, and Hedemark embarked on a quintessential American cross-country trip from Oakland, California to New Jersey. Along the way, Martin appropriated the open road as a canvas, creating temporary, site-specific drawings in continuous lines of water-soluble spray paint. The result was a series of mesmeric, map-like drawings—autobiographical meditations on line and the language of dreams—created against immense landscapes such as Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats and the shores of Lake Michigan. The trip was captured on large-format film cameras by Connecticut-based photographer Theo Coulombe and resulted in a series of collaboratively produced works which are currently on view at the NBMAA, together with video documentation by Hedemark.
