NEW/NOW: Clinton Deckert

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

NEW/NOW: Clinton Deckert

Mary & George W. Cheney, Jr. Gallery

Join the Museum in welcoming surreal abstractionist Clinton Deckert to the Cheney Gallery as the next NEW/NOW artist. In discussing his work, Deckert describes his process as “exploratory and spontaneous.” He begins by splashing thin paints or loose ink washes over canvas board, blotting with rags and other materials to allow images to emerge on their own. Deckert’s works are not only reminiscent of the imagery employed by artists such as Hieronymous Bosch and Salvador Dalí, but this process, which he refers to as “painterly alchemy,” is evocative of his predecessors as well. Allowing the convergence of his chosen media to assist him in creating his imagery, Deckert constructs implied images, allowing the viewer’s imagination to take over. The NBMAA is thrilled to exhibit this NEW/NOW artist’s contribution to challenging our perceptions and encouraging a constant dialogue amongst visitors and viewers alike. Deckert has twice been awarded an Individual Artist Grant from the Greater Hartford Arts Council, has exhibited widely in New York, and in 2013 was selected to show his work, Beneath the Milieu as an American delegate by the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibit at the Louvre Museum. The artist was born in Chicopee, MA and grew up in Southington, CT where he currently resides and works. The NEW/NOW series is supported by Greg and Marzena Silpe. NEW/NOW: Clinton Deckert is supported by the Howard Fromson Endowment for Emerging Artists.
