Hannah Cohoon Bio

Hannah Cohoon (1788–1864) is considered a pre-eminent Shaker artist, whose works have become icons of Shaker material culture. Cohoon entered the Shaker community of Hancock, MA, in 1817 with her son and daughter. She is remembered today for her music compositions and gift drawings that were uniquely abstract, simple, and personal. Unlike most Shaker gift drawings, Cahoon’s works bear her signature and are easily attributable.
